What Is Bariatric Prom?

Many people who undergo bariatric (weight loss) surgery, have been plus-sized for many years, maybe even their entire lives. Living as a plus-sized person in the world can be challenging and those challenges affect the way we experience some of life's most common milestones: including our prom.

For many, the thought of prom brings back memories of picking the perfect dress or tux, getting dressed up, perhaps a first limo ride. Bariatric patients share those memories but they are prefaced by memories of the difficulty of finding clothes that fit. Of not feeling confident in pictures. Of wishing we didn’t stand out so much against our other classmates. Some of us didn’t go to our proms because we faced bullying and shame.

And some of us simply want to celebrate the new, healthier lives and paths we are on.

No matter what stage of the bariatric process you are in, celebrate the decision to reclaim your life at The Bariatric Prom!

The Bariatric Prom will be held on November 1, 2014, 5 - 10 p.m. at the event room at Morganview Apartments, located at 1500 Pentridge Rd. Baltimore, MD 21230. It is a formal event that will be held in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan area. It will feature music, weight-loss surgery friendly food, photo packages (re-do your prom picture!) and inspiration.

Guests will have the opportunity to showcase their before and after photos in a special slide show and make a short testimonial about how losing weight has changed their lives. They will also receive a special "swag bag" full of weight-loss surgery friendly treats.

Everything about this night will be designed to celebrate and inspire. We will celebrate our new lives and how far we've come and we will inspire each other to stay the course because obesity is a lifetime battle!

Who is hosting the Bariatric Prom?

In its inaugural year, The Bariatric Prom will be hosted by Afrikus Hart and Nikki Massie (of Bariatric Foodie), the founding members of Bariatric Friends, a group of bariatric post-ops committed to promoting self-esteem and healthy habits after weight loss surgery.

Ultimately our goal is that The Bariatric Prom will become a fundraiser to help pre-op patients off-set the costs of bariatric surgery. We believe bariatric surgery should be an affordable option to anyone looking to lose weight and live a healthier life.

In this first year, however, our goal is to simply put on the best event possible to serve as a good foundation for years to come. We hope you can join us!

Why is the prom being held in November? I thought proms were a spring thing?

The choice to hold The Bariatric Prom in the fall is intentional. Finding affordable and available venues alongside traditional proms can be challenging! Plus, we deserve a time that is ours. So The Bariatric Prom will continue to be held in the fall, although probably earlier in the fall in subsequent years.
